Dental Health Technicians (also referred to as Dental Surgery Technicians or Dental Laboratory Technicians) play a dual role in oral healthcare depending on their setting. They either work chairside in a clinic assisting dentists with patient care, or behind the scenes in a dental laboratory fabricating custom dental appliances.
1. Clinical & Chairside Duties (Dental Surgery Technicians)
When working directly in dental clinics or public health units, their primary responsibility is to support the dentist and ensure safe, efficient patient care:Â
- Chairside Assisting: Assisting the dentist during procedures like extractions, fillings, and root canals using four-handed dentistry techniques.
- Basic Procedures: Performing non-invasive, preventative dental procedures within their legal scope, such as scaling and polishing teeth.
- Infection Control: Sterilizing and disinfecting dental instruments, preparing the treatment room, and managing clinical waste.
- Dental Radiography: Taking, developing, and processing dental X-rays to aid in patient diagnosis.
- Patient Education: Teaching patients proper brushing, flossing, and general oral hygiene strategies.
2. Laboratory Duties (Dental Lab Technicians)
When working in a dental laboratory, the role transitions to the precision craftsmanship and design of oral prosthetics based on prescriptions from a dentist:
- Fabricating Restorations: Creating custom-made crowns, bridges, porcelain veneers, and dental implants to repair broken or missing teeth.
- Prosthodontics: Designing and manufacturing full or partial removable dentures.
- Orthodontic Appliances: Constructing braces, retainers, and mouthguards to correct tooth positioning or protect teeth.
- Digital Dentistry: Utilizing computer-aided design (CAD/CAM) software and 3D printing technology to scan models and manufacture high-precision appliances.
